This documentary just came out on DVD... a really enjoyable film about Scorsese's love for Italian Cinema (with some photos of his youth in NYC and many clips from the classics). I read a review of it a while back in The Nation (when it was playing at a film festival in NYC), so maybe it's possible to search for that on their website.

Re: Scorsese's Voyage to Italy
Sun, July 18, 2004 - 1:03 AMYeah it's pretty good. I'd say the only problem is he picks quite famous films and if you've seen them, he goes just a bit too much into depth with the plot, etc. So it can feel like a cliff notes rather than his view.
But of course I still got the dvd.

Thu, July 29, 2004 - 6:22 PMi'm watching it right now as a matter of fact. quite good. he's no attenborough and his film theory's a bit thin, but he picks on interesting choices forom a director's point of view. and if you havent seen the early italian neorealism it's a good cliffnotes.
i'd like to see somebody do this w/ early russian/soviet films. and also w/ silent and comdies.

Wed, September 22, 2004 - 8:40 AMIt is a good primer for people who have not been exposed to the neo realismo films. It should whet the appetite for more. The DVds are a bit pricey, but it is still a film worth getting.
