Caught the matinee today at the Castro. The restored print gets mixed reviews. Many scenes very low in constrast. No deep blacks. The audio wasn't great, but I'm sure they had shit mono to work with.
Also, they seemd to have awful projection problems at the Castro. At one point for about 2 minutes the film changed aspect ratio (border at bottom of image). I'm assuming it's the projector not the print. Also they seemed to have a problem changing reels, as there were 2 short gaps which seemed to be between reels. Maybe they have a new person in the booth.
Some great scenes in this film. Definitely worth seeing on the big screen.

Re: i vitelloni
Mon, December 15, 2003 - 11:42 AMI agree it's definitely worth seeing. I saw it Friday at the later showing. I didn't notice any aspect ratio change, but the audio I think was as good as it's going to get for a theater that age. -

Re: i vitelloni
Mon, December 15, 2003 - 6:38 PMThe crappy sound is probably not the Castro's fault; they put a new sound system in a few years ago, as well as new seats and a new screen (there used to be a giant stain across the screen). I saw the remastered version of Scorsese/The Band's "Last Waltz," which had a new mix (prepared more for the DVD than the limited screenings). It sounded great, even in that giant room.
The aspect ratio change happened on the scene on the beach with the dog (he chases the dog and finds the sister with the shady man). It was probably related to them just receiving the print and not having their shit together.
Anyway.... anybody else see it? Thoughts on the actual film? -

Wed, November 24, 2004 - 7:25 AMI saw it at Cinematheque at the Art Gallery of Ontario about a year ago. I really enjoyed it and saw it to be early inspiration for Amarcord, and maybe even Roma. -

Re: i vitelloni
Wed, November 24, 2004 - 6:00 PMThanks for reminding me it's at the Castro. Also for warning me about the ineptness of the projectionist. I will certainly forewarn management before taking my seat. Then I will simply sit back and relish on of the great filmmakers of all time.
By the way, regarding the sound: Fellini shot MOS, as you probably all well know. The master never bothered about recording dialogue until post-production. He concentrated on the visual, then in post sync'd dialogue and sfx, then poured on a thick luscious helping of Nino Rota.
