Anyone catch the new Criterion Ermanno Olmi films? (I Fidanzati and Il Posto). I've seen them both. Posto is obviously better - a great coming of age story, but Fidanzati has some interesting moments. It reminded me of Antonioni's Deserto Rosso, with the industrial landscapes and social isolation...

The boyfriend and I watched "I Fidanzati" last weekend. We have "Il Posto" but haven't had a chance to look at it yet.

I'm not too familiary with Olmi, but I fell in love with "I Fidanzati." The editing style struck me as completely contemporary -- in an odd way, it reminded me of "Memento" (I know that's a totally pop reference, but it's what immediately sprang to mind), while the occasional touches of surrealism reminded me of Bunuel (the stray dog in the church) and Lynch (the lady carrying the cot walking down the stairs). I loved how Olmi gave the film a hopeful ending without a really hokey happy ending.
